商業英文單字深聊系列－用畫面理解以under為首的動詞
上次我們介紹了 leverage 和 traction 這兩個有意思的單字，希望大家都有所收穫。今天來跟大家聊聊幾個以under為開頭的常見動詞，這四個單字都不難，但是交替出現時，很容易混淆。
作為商業英文裡面出現頻率極高的單字，這幾個字其實都很有畫面，如果我們只是翻字典查解釋，就把單字背起來那就太可惜了。
藉由想像畫面，理解這幾個字，不但在平常閱讀時事文章的時候，速度可以加快許多外，日常的溝通裡，也能適當地運用，不但會讓談話內容更有畫面，也讓溝通更加精準。
以下要跟讀者介紹的四個動詞分別是：undercut,undermine,underscore,以及underpin。
#1 undercut
undercut直翻的意思為削價競爭，當我們使用這個字時，後面不用再加「價格」，因為undercut已經包含價格的涵義在裡頭，後面直接加競爭的對象即可。
從字典中查的解釋是"to charge less than a competitor."
舉例來說能這樣使用：Big supermarkets can undercut smaller ones, especially mom-and-pop shops.
但其實undercut還有另一個意思，想像在樹木的下方砍鋸（under + cut），因此延伸出另一個語意是指削弱、損害，並使對方失敗。常用在政治鬥爭或者是公司裡面權力鬥爭，其中一個常見的手法就是放負面消息，削弱對方的支持度。
像是近期的時事案例，在俄羅斯與烏克蘭的危機之中，儘管拜登與北約代表團採取強硬立場，尋求外交途徑解決，但是，德法兩國因為能源需求以及其他原因，對俄羅斯採取不同的態度，兩者都削弱了美國在這件事情上所做的外交努力。
將undercut帶入這件事，我們能這樣使用：Russia is on the march, and Germany and France are undercutting American diplomacy and charting their courses almost as if the Biden administration did not exist.
#2 undermine
第二個詞和undercut有些類似，一樣是有削弱信心、減損權威與可信度的意思，特別有危害其狀態與成功的機會，簡單說就是搞破壞，差別是undermine比起前者更是屬於漸進式的。
從字典中查的解釋是" to make someone less confident, less powerful, or less likely to succeed, or to make something weaker, often gradually. "舉例來說能這樣使用：Their confidence is undermined by criticism.
undermine延伸出的第二層意思是，想像就是有人在你家下方挖土（mining），一天挖一些，應該不久就會讓房子有崩落下沉的危機，重點在於這個動作要經過長時間的努力。
像是近期的時事案例，克里姆林宮否認有任何入侵或破壞烏克蘭的計劃，儘管它試圖制服前蘇聯共和國並停止其與西方的融合。
將undermine帶入這件時事，我們能這樣使用：The Kremlin has denied any plans to invade or undermine Ukraine, even as it seeks to subdue the former Soviet republic and halt its integration with the West.
#3 underscore
第三個詞最直接的意思是劃底線，就像在念書時，會拿螢光筆或原子筆在重要的部分畫上底線，所以中文的語意是強調其重要性。
從字典中查的解釋是"If something such as an action or an event underscores another, it draws attention to the other thing and emphasizes its importance. "
後面常見搭配詞有importance或need ，若要凸顯所面臨挑戰，也能加上challenge。
像是近期的時事案例，美國的創新競爭法（Innovation and Competition Act）已經在參議院通過，但是眾議院還在卡關中，主是因為民主黨人希望該法案能夠達到更多的目標，這樣的狀況凸顯出了嚴峻挑戰，如何讓法案在兩黨與兩院之間通過。
將underscore帶入這件時事，我們能這樣使用：The stalled legislation underscores the political challenge that leaders face in crafting legislation that will satisfy House Democrats-including progressives-while holding on to Senate Republicans.
#4 underpin
最後一個詞我們來看看underpin，其實這個字也很有畫面，想像房子下面有一些鋼架地基撐住了整棟建築，讓他穩固不傾倒，這就是underpin 的第二層意思，延伸出，支撐、鞏固、強化的意思。
從字典中查的解釋是"If one thing underpins another, it helps the other thing to continue or succeed by supporting and strengthening it."
像是近期的時事案例，台積電的執行長魏哲家在日前的法說會提到，台積電的資本支出創新高，是因為看到了未來幾年整個市場相當強勁的需求，這些需求不是海市蜃樓，也不是空穴來風，而是被幾個不可抗拒的產業趨勢（megatrends）所支撐而構成的強烈需求。
將underpin帶入這件時事，我們能這樣使用：And our capacity planning is based on the long-term market demand profile,underpinned by the industry megatrend of 5G and HPC and the semiconductor content enrichment in very end devices.
